Trailers with factory under-run bars fitted by trailer manufacturers demonstrate a ‘minimum nod’ to safety standards but TRL (Transport Research Laboratory) research shows they can increase the chances of a cyclist or pedestrian becoming ‘entangled’ and dragged beneath the trailer into the path of the rear wheels. This directly correlates with my own police experience of collisions where witnesses reported seeing a victim ‘sucked’ beneath the vehicle before being crushed by the rear wheels of a lorry.
